BASIC INFO:

The Classroom Library project is being organized on Peace Boat`s 69th global voyage during the Global University exchange program in Cambodia, where we will visit a local school near Koh Ker, which Peace Boat has funded. Participants on the exchange program will learn about the Cambodian education system from the teachers and principal and also see Peace Boat/PEPY’s
classroom library program.

"Peace Boat is a Japan-based international non-governmental and non-profit organization that works to promote peace, human rights, equal and sustainable development and respect for the environment. Peace Boat seeks to create awareness and action based on effecting positive social and political
change in the world. We pursue this through the organization of global educational programmes, responsible travel, cooperative projects and advocacy activities. These activities are carried out on a partnership basis with other civil society organizations and communities in Japan, Northeast Asia, and around the world.

PEPY: PEPY is both an international non-governmental organization registered in the USA and Cambodia, The PEPY Ride, and an educational adventure and service-learning tour operator, PEPY Tours, that helps to fund our education programs while inspiring change in the way people travel.
Recognizing that the traditional school library model seems to be failing Cambodia (no librarians, lack of knowledge on using books in the classroom, locked libraries with little access to the books, etc), PEPY connected with other organizations in Cambodia in order to create classroom libraries matched with teacher training. By bringing the books into the classroom, the hope is that both the teachers will be empowered to creatively use the resources available to them and the students would have more access to reading material.

A Classroom Library consists at its base of accessible, grade-appropriate books in a classroom, coupled with teacher training on how to integrate those books into classes. The classroom library model has the possibility to increase a love of reading in approximately 2000 students at 10 schools but to make this possibility a reality the focus must be on providing training for teachers.

• The library is requested to be built at the primary school in Koh Ker, Preah Vinhear province , where Peace Boat would deliver the library stands during their visit to the school on April 9th, 2010. One PEPY member will also join this visit to the school to start with a training program on how to use the materials.
• Shelves + books cost about $300 per stand, and there are 3 classrooms at this school:
  1st and 2nd grade – 1 class
  3rd and 4th grade – second classroom
  5th and 6th grade – third classroom
• Our goal is to raise $900 USD, to provide the three classrooms with libraries and the necessary teacher training.
